I originally set up this blog to showcase the old Dope Rider comic strips I occasionally did for High Times from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s. With High Times' 40th anniversary issue in 2014, I restarted the strip and have been doing my best to get one done for each issue. A few months after they appear in the magazine, I will archive them here. Note: all images are copyrighted by Paul Kirchner.

Pictures of Tom Conroy

Going through a lot of things as I prepare to move, I came across some photos of my friend and mentor Tom Conroy, taken in the 1980s.

Photo of Tom and his cat taken in New York in 1984.

Tom and his late wife Carole taken in Houston on Memorial Day, 1987.

Dope Rider, "Rug"

I got this idea while sitting in the waiting room at the chiropractor's office, staring at the carpet and spacing out, much as you see here. I'm not much like Dope Rider, but maybe a little. It's one of my favorites among the recent strips.

Dope Rider "Budman"

I got this idea when thinking about the Bat Signal that summons Batman. Will Dope Rider's alter ego, Budman, ever again make an appearance? I highly doubt it.

The frame at the end is an homage to M.C. Escher.

Dope Rider "Lava Lamp"

I got this idea from a piece of artwork done by my daughter Emily. She does a lot of surrealistic images and sells prints of her work online at  https://society6.com/primordialsoupoftheday

Dope Rider "Day of the Dead"

I've always been fascinated by Day of the Dead imagery and I finally got around to doing a Dope Rider based on it. This one took me a while--lotsa detail.

Dope Rider, "Firebird Motel"

I love the neon motel signs you see in the American Southwest, especially along the old Route 66 in places like Albuquerque. This sign is an adaptation of one I found on Google images.

My friend Tom Conroy once told me that the buttes you see standing above the desert floor date from an ancient war fought by aliens on planet earth; when an anti-matter bomb exploded, the stone directly underneath it was left intact. I liked that idea and fit the reference to the Anti-Matter War in this episode.
